Using Social Media for Marketing


What is Social Media?

Do I really need to tell you about it? I'm sure you all know, but what you might know is how to use it's power to advertise and market your products or services. As the name suggests, social media are media created for the purpose of social interaction. On social media sites like Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest and even popular blogs and forums, people interact by creating, sharing, and exchanging information and ideas in virtual communities.

Making Effective use of Social Media

If you create remarkable content, visitors to your page will share it with their friends on social media. If the content is really good, people will create a back-link to it. We’ve already discussed how important back-links are to your e-business or bricks-and-mortar company. And word of mouth counts towards promoting your business too!

If many read something you wrote or created and they tell their friends, your post can go viral! That spells huge traffic to your website and from all around the world!

Use social media to post news about your business. Have you won an award? Post the news with photos. Does your company have an upcoming event, sale, giveaway, discount? Tweet about it and direct visitors to your web page to download coupons or tickets, or more information. Remember, social media sites are not where you directly promote your product. It’s where you make “announcements” about special events.

With millions of people all over the world using social media sites like Facebook, you can’t afford to ignore this practically free advertising venue!


Meet Pinterest!

The newest bandwagon on the social media circuit is Pinterest. You really need to pay attention to this site. Basically, Pinterest is a visual scrapbook network. It allows visitors to “pin” images and video for the purpose of sharing it. Since March, Pinterest is the fastest growing site ever!

The typical Pinterest user spends an average of ninety minutes on this site. This surpasses Twitter and ties with Facebook. If your niche market (we’ll talk about this next) is young females then this site is perfect for you. The average “pinner” is 30 and married or in a relationship. Pinterest has specific interest areas like: crafts, jewelry, fitness, clothing, interior design, furniture, gardening, photography and antiques. This allows you to connect with your target market.

The proof is already in. Pinterest is on its way to becoming a major player in social marketing. Last month, a Japanese online retailer, Rakuten, made a hundred million dollars using Pinterest!

The Fuss about Facebook! 

Facebook, the brainchild of Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg was launched in June of 2004. To date, it is the world's most popular social networking website with Pinterest coming a close second. Facebook’s appear is that it makes it easy for you to connect with your family and friends online. Facebook has over a billion users worldwide—and growing by the thousands daily.

Facebook has forever altered the way people communicate—both on and offline. As thousands more continue to join Facebook each day, it has become easier than ever before to share news, photos, important events and humorous happenings with the people you care about.

Facebook has taken a new angle beyond communication with those close to you. People have begun to use this social medium to find lost connections and make new ones. Planning a twenty-fifth high school reunion? Announce it on Facebook and ask others to reach out to their friends.

A third and more recent use of Facebook is businesses and organizations Facebook pages. Many bricks-and-mortar and e-businesses have begun to use Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter and LinkedIn to describe their services, make announcements of special products or events and ask “Facebook friends” to “like” them. This has produced huge almost-free advertising of the very best kind: word of mouth!

Facebook is now available to anyone with a valid email address, which means the one that is verified by Facebook. The user must receive an email message at that address and click on a link in the message to prove that it is valid. Facebook users can join other networks based on work or school affiliation or geographic regions.
